Stall 13 is geared toward addressing challenging cases, specifically horses who have struggled physically, mentally, or temperamentally at the end of their track career and / or in their second careers. Stall 13 provides space, rehabilitation, and retraining for hard-to-place horses like warhorses (those who have run over 50 races), those needing rehab or redirection, and those whose second (sporthorse) careers have left them frustrated or without a safety net.
Our goal is always to get the horses right – physically, mentally, and under saddle – and then get them to the best home possible given their needs. There are a lot of OTTB rescues and adoptions out there, and so many are doing great work, especially with rehoming horses fresh off the track. But over years of working with these horses, we have found that the need isn’t always immediate. Sometimes horses who retired a while back hit stumbling blocks in their training, behavior, or soundness – exhausting their owner’s patience, finances, and training abilities. While we absolutely rehab and retrain tough fresh-from-the-track cases, we also provide a space to help the horses whose race days may be long past but whose futures remain uncertain.
Stall 13 was founded by Aubrey Graham of Kivu Sporthorses / APGraham Eventing. Aubrey has extensive experience in retraining Thoroughbreds and has spent years working with the tough cases. She is the founder of Thoroughbred Logic - a Horse Nation article series that focuses on learning more about and retraining off-track Thoroughbreds. Aubrey and her team provide the care, rehabilitation and retraining for all of the Stall 13 horses.
Kivu Sporthorses is a for profit training and rehoming facility that deals with all walks of Thoroughbreds. Stall 13 takes the challenging case Thoroughbreds who need more time, care and assistance to help rehab, retrain, and rehome them. Donations for Stall 13 only contribute to Stall 13 horses and Stall 13 operations. Besides being in the same barn and under the same trainer, there is no financial crossover from Stall 13 to Kivu Sporthorses.
While we take in horses straight from the track, we also help those in their mid career who have hit stumbling blocks and need assistance. In addition, we don’t just adopt them out. Instead, we take the time to train them and get them going well under saddle before carefully matching them with appropriate new homes.
We are working on the horse donation process and selection and are not taking outside horses at this time. You can support our current horses through a one time donation or sponsorship at the link here:
